insulation of the historical cupola pavilion

In the Muskau bathing park, the historical bathhouse and the iron vitriol fountain belonging to it, was rehabilitated. One special
challenge was the interior insulation of the curved, 10 m-long outer wall. The park is situated on both sides of the Neisse and has belonged to the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
From November 2014 to May 2015 the listed cupola pavilion was restored. It is regarded as a symbol for the Muskau spa and health tradition going back to 1823. The rehabilitation costs for the cupola building and the iron vitriol fountain amount to approx. 300,000 euros. After the stone lions on the ramp near the New Castle and the rehabilitation work on the Old Castle's portal, this was the third stage of construction which the Förderverein Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau e.V. supported with contributions from partner societies, foundations and inhabitants. After rehabilitation, the iron vitriol spring, discovered in 1822, will flow at the building's gabled end. Inside the cupola building, there will be an exhibition on the bathing park.
Interior insulation in the cupola pavilion
In the pavilion it was important to insulate the interior of all outer walls. The works were put out for tender and the Bernd Lehmann Außenputz und Innenputz company from Wilthen obtained the contract. On a 130 m² wall surface, epatherm insulating boards with a width of 30 mm were used. To insulate the approx. 10 m long curved wall of the cupola building, the experts sawed the indoor climate boards into strips with a width from 80 to 100 mm. Window embrasures were cladded with reveal boards of a width of 20 mm.
epatherm system: special features and application methods
The epatherm interior insulation system is based on a mineral calcium silicate. In addition to the thermal insulation, the pressure-resistant boards are noise-reducing and not flammable. They absorb moisture and re-emit it to the indoor air. Their "buffering effect" avoids the formation of mould and provides for pleasant room air conditions. In the cupola pavilion, the boards were sawn, given a primary coating and applied vertically to the wall by Lehmann employees using the epatherm system glue. To insulate the reveal boards, the strong board solution epatherm etl was used.
History of the Bad Muskau park
North of Görlitz, Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau (1785 -1871) created remarkable gardens. He travelled through the Orient and dreamed of creating a parkland with oriental influences. The park with its approx. 700 hectares on both sides of the Neisse comprises the palace garden, the bathing park and the mountain park on the German side as well as the lower park, the arboretum and the Braunsdorf Fields on the Polish side. It was in the park that the Muskau spa tradition started. In 1822, the iron vitriol spring was discovered, whose water promises healing. The cupola building itself was built later and was finished by the von Arnims in 1914. Up to 1930, it served as a reading and waiting area for the neighbouring moor baths. After the war, the adjacent wings were pulled down or partially demolished.
